Christopher Nolan and 'Inception' - The maze within...

One weird thought came on my mind right after watching the movie. What if Christopher Nolan directs a Rom-com??

I was dragged into Christophar Nolan's movies when people said that 'Ghajini' was inspired by 'Memento'. When I first watched 'Memento' I was just dumbfounded, and I couldn't get that movie out of my mind for couple of days. It fed the intellect and I thought that I gained a couple of IQ points. Then I started watching all the other Christopher Nolan's movies, especially his feature debut "Following". His plots never tend to be predictable and keep the viewers guessing. Maybe, that is why he got a big cult 'following'. His next film to 'Memento', 'Insomnia' was just a fair attempt. It had certain guessable twists, but since it is a remake I won't blame Nolan. But the movie still had the Nolan touch.

When I came to know that Christopher Nolan is directing a Batman movie, I was thrilled. As I was doing my Undergrad in Trichy (India), I ain't got to see the movie in theaters. One of my friend who is a big Batman fanboy saw the movie in a Chennai theater and he didn't like that movie. Since the word of mouth was not good about it, I decided to skip 'Batman Begins'. After coming to US for my Masters, all the late nights passed by watching good and shitty movies. One boring weekend I decided to watch 'Batman Begins' and I was amazed to see the dark nature of the movie similar to the comics. I couldn't wait to watch 'The Prestige' and obviously that was the next in my movie marathon. Similar in the lines of 'The Illusionist', the magical realistic elements in the movie was quite astonishing (I know it sounds cliche').

Everything added up expectation to 'The Dark Knight'. The movie which took some elements from the original DC comic 'The Killing Joke' added another dimension (no not 3D) to the Batman movie series. I never stood in queue for a movie in an american movie house. There was a long queue to get the tickets for 'The Dark Knight' during the opening weekend. After 2 weeks when we decided to watch the movie in IMAX, still there was queue. Now the movie itself has become a sort of religion, Nolan adds up more followers with his summer blockbuster 'Inception'.

Psychological thrillers always 'overclock' our brain cells. But 'Inception' went to the extreme and my mind become numb for a while after the movie was over. I could see people in theater same as me. Inception is nothing but 'The Matrix' meets the 'James Bond' franchise. Christopher Nolan always wanted to direct a James Bond movie and he also mentioned about his desire in an interview (wouldn't be awesome?). He also made some references to his favorite  James Bond movie  in 'Inception'. The mountain headquarters featuring in the third level dream is designed same as 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'.

No other movie other than 'Inception', transfixed me to every single frame. Sometimes, while watching a movie you could have your own thoughts about your life or about your presence. But in this movie, you lose yourself in a way that you have no other thought other than movie. Given the complexity, our mind over works to understand the plot. When film makers pre assume their audience too dumb, Nolan assumed his audience as intelligent as him. The hope he kept on his audience makes him a great film maker.

When switching into various levels of dreams in the plot, the viewer does develops his lateral thinking. At the end of the movie I also had another idea. While watching the movie, a viewer should be hooked up to an Electroencephalogram and the brain behavior of the viewer should be studied. This movie also serves as a good source of study material for psychology majors. I won't be wondered if certain Professors would be seriously thinking about this movie to add it to their syllabus. Previously, 'The Matrix' was the one which initiated a lot of attention.

I guess I never told about the story. It would be better go watch and have your own interpretation of the movie. But there is one spoiler I should reveal.  At the end, Saito (Ken Wantanabe) as a old man reveals to Cobb  (Di Caprio) that he knows a man called Cobb. The scene cuts to Cobb in the plane and returning to LA airport. As Miles (Michael Caine) take him to his home and Cobb sees his children. In order to confirm he is not in dream he gets his totem - the top. But as he spins the totem, it wobbles a little bit. But it looks like a resilient spinning top. So...
